Amethyst Rosencrans
Amethyst Rosencrans can almost be considered a legend in SecondLife. Certainly a legend within the BDSM community, because she is the creator of the infamous Amethyst collar. She comes across as a genuinely nice person, and is committed to making SL a fun place to practice BDSM.
If you're a newcomer to BDSM in SecondLife, one of the first things you will encounter, and wonder at, is the ubiquitous slave collar. A collar is what a Dom or Domme gives to a submissive as a symbol of ownership and control, and by far the most common collar in SL is the Amethyst.
Amethyst developed her slave collar in mid 2005, and since then has sold so many its almost impossible to count. She says she doesn't know how many she's sold ... but she knows its a lot! Now that would seem an understatement because for the last three years the Amethyst collar has been THE collar to have in the BDSM world in SecondLife. It has numerous animations and many other extras for controlling any willing slave avatar.
Although Amethyst is probably most known for her collar, she has created many other items and is the owner of the Sensations brand in SL. Sensations sell everything the discerning BDSM 'er could possibly wish for. Cuffs, ball gags, arm binders, gadgets, genitalia, furniture and more, and its all housed in a huge Sensations Superstore.

Despite her busy schedule Amethyst managed to stop by and speak to us and give us her thoughts on BDSM and SecondLife.
WebMaster: Hello Amethyst...What would you say is your role in the SL BDSM community?
Amethyst Rosencrans : Well, really just to enhance the experience in any way I can... I make cuffs, gags, binders, spreader bars and the Sensations System which work together to improve the BDSM roleplaying.
WebMaster: How long have you been making products for the SL BDSM community?
Amethyst Rosencrans: Well the collar wasn't my first item... I started making dance items...the Amethyst Promenades and other dancing accessories... but then I made my collar in mid-2005.
WebMaster: Yes.. What made you decide to make the collar?
Amethyst Rosencrans: There were a couple of other collars on the market at the time, and I wanted to improve on them. I contacted Kyrah of KDC about improving hers, but at the time she wasn't interested so I made my own.
WebMaster: What was it you wanted to improve... the scripting?
Amethyst Rosencrans: Yes mainly.... initially I wanted to have multiple owners, and didn't want the leashes to go into the middle of the avatar :)
WebMaster: I see.... so you was practising BDSM yourself at the time?
Amethyst Rosencrans: I was.... I came from Sociolotron (another online game) and missed some of the features from there in SL. Its graphics are not very good but it is very good for roleplay.
WebMaster: Cool .. and would you say you mainly play as submissive?
Amethyst Rosencrans: Yes I was mainly a sub, I took the Domme roll for a time in the previous game, but not in RL, and not much here in SL. The dominant role is very forced for me.
WebMaster: Ah I see .. so do you have much experience of BDSM in RL?
Amethyst Rosencrans: I experienced it a little (mostly) as a spectator in real life ....I had a friend that worked at a club that did BDSM type events... and I went there and watched. And I tried it once... but it was with someone I didn't entirely trust... and anyone who knows anything about the lifestyle in real life knows that is a bad idea.
WebMaster: Yes a very bad idea.. Do you think you'll ever try it again?
Amethyst Rosencrans: I would definitely try again, and would like to if I find the right person :)
WebMaster: What would you say BDSM means?
Amethyst Rosencrans: Well it means a lot of things.... It is a fantasy.... it is a connection.... it is a release.. It can be much more.... but that is what it is to me at the moment.
WebMaster: What advice would you give to people new to BDSM?
Amethyst Rosencrans: Well I think that I would suggest that they try it here in SL, to see if they like it.... but that real life BDSM is considerably different... and SL BDSM can provide a taste. SL BDSM doesn't have the danger (and uncomfortability) that RL BDSM has.... so it is a much more safe environment to experiment in.
WebMaster: Yes ... So what are your goals for the future in SL?
Amethyst Rosencrans: Well when SL stabilizes again I hope to continue to
expand the portfolio I have... and get into other areas of interest... I have a wedding sim and a fantasy sim in development.
but they have both been on hold due to all of the SL problems. And i'm committed to providing updates to all my items
as long as I am in SL. :)

Yes, Sensations is a huge brand in SecondLife and is a brand leader in SL BDSM. Unfortunately the proprietors of SecondLife, Linden Labs have been experimenting with upgrades to the system and have implemented a new asset server. This has resulted in people paying for items in SL and not actually receiving them, and this has had a knock on effect on all businesses within SL.
Amethyst herself has been spending hours each day answering IM's from irate customers and trying to sort out failed transactions. She says if SL continues in this way for much longer the business may be in serious threat.
But despite all the problems with SL, Amethyst has managed to build an impressive business. She works with her business partner Earalia Nolan, who makes most of the animations, and they are both committed to improving the experience of BDSM play for all Second Lifers.
