Kailani Ling - The business of SL BDSM
Kailani Ling is smart. She's a business woman who seems intent on building a BDSM empire in SecondLife. She's the owner of Bound & Determined which is THE most popular BDSM haunt in SL, The Twisted Orchid Fetish Club, which is probably the second most well known BDSM club, and Kinky-O products which is the fastest growing BDSM product range in SL!
Three very big businesses, and on top of that she's built a Pony Play Fetish Farm, which offers a fantastic playground for BDSM' ers and is owner of the Thailani Development which has developed a number of islands in a Thai style theme.
Owning all of that would be an impressive resume by anyone's standards, and the fact she's achieved this by being inworld for little over a year makes it all the more impressive.
Its all a far cry from the curious girl that only entered SL because she came across some SL BDSM pictures while surfing the net. Yes, Kailani is a real life BDSM 'er and has always held a specific fantasy for Pony girls (more on that later). She came across a picture of a pony girl in SL while surfing the net and decided to join SL herself.. After winning several trophies as a pony girl, she decided she wanted to build a BDSM place of her own. A place where people could enjoy themselves and engage in BDSM shows and just have fun. The Twisted Orchid Fetish Club was built in mid February 2007..
A Kinky Domination!
Yes, along with BDSM clubs and play areas, Kailani wants to take over the BDSM products market. You won't go far in SL without running into a Kinky-O vendor. This is due to her "proactive" affiliate sales program. Its a way for Kinky-O! to scale the store business as SecondLife grows, and take it beyond the constraints of what one or two people can do.
She works with a number of designers and tests all the products herself. She is committed to developing some of the coolest BDSM products on the market, and to reach as wide an audience as possible. Its all big business for someone that entered SL as a pony girl!
So we caught up with Kailani and asked for her thoughts on BDSM both in RL and SL.
WebMaster: So Kailani...What would you say is your role in the SL BDSM community?
Kailani Ling : I've actually never seen myself as having a real role. I guess through places like B&D its to provide a safe and comfortable place for people to play and explore in fetish. For Twisted Orchid it was a place where people could enjoy, observe, interact and meet other fetish interested people, again in a safe and comfortable environment
WebMaster: So are you familiar with BDSM in RL?
Kailani Ling : Sure. I have a few very sexy pvc and latex fetish outfits and some restraints, etc. I used to go to bondage club parties pretty regularly but I wasn't happy with most of the other people who went so I stopped. And as I said I was always interested in pony girls and it was the pony girl pictures that got me interested in SL.
WebMaster: Yes I was going to ask about pony girls ..Can you explain what a pony girl is all about?
Kailani Ling: Its a form of objectification, in this case a type of human animal roleplay. It can be appealing not only due to the levels of control and training involved but also the idea of the humiliation of retaining your human form (in many cases) but being forced to take on the role of an animal. This same concept applies to puppy play just as easily. Personally I'm really into humiliation, that's my thing, not so much about pain, so to be objectified either as a lowly animal or a sex object is very exciting.
WebMaster: Ah yes ..Can I ask what it is about humiliation that's exciting?
Kailani Ling: Its hard to say about other people. I know for me I get a feeling that just heightens my sexual response. Humiliation can be very tricky and hard to do the right way though. But for me, I guess its the idea of being reduced, made to be lower, forced into a position that I wouldn't be in otherwise. It kind of goes back to that i'm used to being dominant and on top in whatever I do. When i'm in school I like to have the top grades, so this is a way to push me down to a level that's exciting.
WebMaster: I see ...
Kailani Ling: Humiliation comes in many different levels. For some, the act of wearing a collar (which shows a person is a property or an animal) or calling someone Master is humiliating, because it shows they've given up control of their own bodies and themselves. Humiliation can go much more extreme as well to verbal humiliation, animal roleplay as we mentioned, etc
WebMaster: Yeah sure ..
Kailani Ling: But a lot of girls have this fantasy about being turned into a sex toy that mindlessly fucks anything that moves, gangbangs, etc.. I know I have those fantasies. I dunno if i'd ever do it in RL, but its a nice fantasy to have.
WebMaster: Yes, i've seen that a lot in SL...
Kailani Ling: Well from the girl's perspective it can be very humiliating, forced to do whatever you're told, no way to fight it. there's a niche of BDSM called mind control which feeds into a lot of that.
WebMaster: Ah interesting .. you mean hypnosis?
Kailani Ling: Right .. here in SL, its just another form of roleplay though, playing the part of a person who is hypnotized or mind controlled and forced to become a slave. Its not that you're really hypnotized here, that would be hard to do, but by taking on that role, it frees you up to do whatever you're told without accepting any consequences or feelings for it.
WebMaster: Yes of course that leads me to my next question.. What are your thoughts on BDSM in SL?
Kailani Ling: I think it has a lot of good potential to educate people and let them play out fantasies and ideas that they ordinarily wouldn't be able to do for a variety of reasons.
WebMaster: Yes ... What advice would you give to people new to BDSM?
Kailani Ling: Well, i think the important thing is to approach everything with an open mind. Don't judge anything, even if its not your thing. The reason being open minded is important is because you don't always know what you like and what will turn you on, so by having a willingness to at least think about everything, it opens up all possibilities to you and allows you to discover more about yourself and what your true desires are.
WebMaster: Yes very true...
Kailani Ling: I would also say to try things from the other side. The best dominants I've ever had were people who had submitted so they understood how things felt and what affect things had. In RL i've rarely met a dominant who never submitted to anyone ever. Same with a sub, its good to dominate once in a while just so you can see what a dominant has to go thru and what their end feels like.
WebMaster: Yes that's great advice...
Kailani Ling: Being a dominant is hard work, I was talking with a Mistress the other day and she had a bunch of subs and I said even if I were dominant I couldn't have slaves because I just don't have time for it. She agreed and said that having slaves is very time consuming for the dominant. Its counter intuitive, you'd think slaves would be there to make the dominants life easier but attention and time requires everyone involved.
WebMaster: Also very true .Finally where would you say is the best place in SL to learn about BDSM?
Kailani Ling: Absolutely Twisted Orchid and Bound and Determined are the best places in SL to learn about and experience BDSM and Kinky-O! is by far the best place to get accessories and equipment to enhance that experience. Nothing else even comes close!

After building Twisted Orchid Kailani began to get a taste for the business side of SL. And an acute business brain coupled with the fact that she's studying for a business degree in real life meant that she was bound to be a success. In March 2007 an employee at the Twisted Orchid started to design a few BDSM items, and having some space around the club Kailani decided to add a little store. "If it doesn't work here I thought, it won't work, and if it does, i'll expand.". And it was in that moment that the Kinky-O Fetish Products Company was born.
it worked well and she expanded and kept expanding, adding more and more products as she found items, and kept using technology to scale and grow the business beyond what other fetish stores in SL had done.Then in September of 2007 she built her Pony Fetish Farm, and in October she purchased the already established Bound & Determined Fetish Dungeon.
